Outgoing manager David Moyes has hinted that the Everton job could be offered internally; with backroom staff Phil Neville and Alan Stubbs both in contention for the post, but with neither candidate having acquired any managerial experience so far, the likelihood is that the post will be offered to an external applicant.
FA Cup winning manager Roberto Martinez remains the front runner for the vacancy at odds of 2.50 and the Wigan manager is rumoured to be open to a move to Goodison Park after turning down roles at Aston Villa and Liverpool previously.
Martinez will have to manage the rigours of the Europa League as well as trying to get his side out of the Championship should he stay at the DW Stadium next season and the balance of the two competitions along with yet another humble transfer budget may push the manager to leave the club after four years at the helm.
Cardiff manager Malky Mackay is thought to have been closely monitored by the Everton hierarchy, but the Scottish manager will be well backed by owner Vincent Tan in the transfer market.
Mackay may be persuaded to finish the job, by keeping the Welsh side in the Premier League next season, but the manager appears to be open to discussing the vacancy with the club after guiding the Bluebirds to the Championship title this year.
A lack of experience south of the border is thought to have counted against Celtic manager Neil Lennon (7.00), despite some good displays in Europe, whilst Bolton’s Dougie Freedman (12.00) has yet to build a meaningful side following his early forays into management.
With the Premier League season now over, Everton will be looking to quickly name David Moyes successor and with Martinez’s future at Wigan uncertain, the FA Cup winning manager appears the most likely man to take over at Goodison Park.
Roberto Martinez to be the next manager of Everton at 2.50
