Fulham and Swansea both hit five without reply in Gameweek 1, whilst Manchester United slipped up against Everton on Monday night. Champions Manchester City face Liverpool at Anfield in the pick of the round in Gameweek 2.
Wayne Rooney (MUN)
Seventeen of Wayne Rooney’s 27 goals last term came at Old Trafford and the England striker will be hoping to secure Manchester United’s first points of the season following the Red Devil’s surprise defeat at Goodison Park on Monday.
All eyes will be on the starting line-up and whether Sir Alex Ferguson starts both Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie in attack in a 4-4-2 formation, although the Dutch forward could again have to settle for a place on the bench due to his limited schedule during pre-season. Rooney scored in the reverse fixture last season as Manchester United ran out 1-0 winners and the striker is a solid choice for the captain’s armband in Gameweek 2.
Gareth Bale (TOT)
A nailed-on starter for Andre Villas-Boas, midfielder Gareth Bale should enjoy his match-up against Steven Reid on the left-hand side this weekend as Steve Clarke’s West Brom travel to White Hart Lane.
Bale scored 10 goals last season, including 14 assists and 21 bonus points and the Welsh international will again link-up with Emmanuel Adebayor after the Manchester City striker finally sealed his return to Tottenham after protracted negotiations.
Michu (SWA) – £6.8m
Michael Laudrup’s summer signing from Rayo Vallecano capped a dream debut with two goals, an assist and two bonus points in the 5-0 demolition of QPR in Gameweek 1. The Spanish midfielder’s stock has quickly rose with fantasy managers eager to snap up the player who scored 15 goals in La Liga last season. Michu will enjoy the comfort of the Liberty Stadium for the first time this weekend with the Swans taking on West Ham and Swansea have favourable fixtures right up until Gameweek 9 in the Premier League.
If you take out Chelsea players Ivanovic and Hazard who played twice during Gameweek 1, no player scored more points last week than Swansea’s Michu. Fantasy managers may even choose to give the Spaniard the captain’s armband this weekend.
James McClean (SUN) – £6.5m
The Northern Ireland international was part of a resolute defensive display against Arsenal in Gameweek 1, which earned him three bonus points in a goalless opener. McClean should find plenty of attacking opportunities against Reading this weekend who conceded four goals midweek against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
McClean who is a favourite of Martin O’Neill’s, featured heavily during the second half of last season and returned five goals, three assists and 18 bonus points. Sunderland are another side who have a favourable fixture run-in over the next six gameweeks.
Marouane Fellaini (EVE) – £6.6m
Fellaini was Everton’s hero on Monday night and it was his goal that secured a surprise victory over Manchester United. David Moyes may task the Belgium midfielder with finding the net more this season following the departure of Tim Cahill and Fellaini has shown his early intent with an all-action display that also earned two bonus points.
Everton come up against Aston Villa this weekend and the Toffees enjoy a good run of fixtures over the next few months in the Premier League and Fellaini should feature prominently.
