Fantasy Football – Premier League Player List 2012/2013

With the Premier League releasing their fantasy football player list for the upcoming season, Sportingly Better takes a quick look at the main talking points, potential fantasy bargains and who you should consider bringing into your side.

Goalkeepers

Top 10 Goalkeepers based on Value

Hart (MCI) £7.0m
Cech (CHE) £6.5m
Reina (LIV) £6.0m
de Gea (MUN) £6.0m
Szczesny (ARS) £5.5m
Howard (EVE) £5.5m
Lindegaard (MUN) £5.5m
Krul (NEW) £5.5m
Vorm (SWA) £5.5m
Friedel (TOT) £5.5m

Manchester City’s Joe Hart is unsurprisingly the most expensive goalkeeper at 7.0, but with Vidic set to be available for the start of the season David De Gea (6.0) may seem like a good option, although the Spaniard may miss the opening few games due to his Olympic involvement. Tim Krul and Michel Vorm have both seen their stock rise after good terms last season, so this year’s cheaper options come in the shape of QPR’s Rob Green (4.5), Norwich’s Jon Ruddy (4.5) and Reading’s Federici (4.5m)

Defenders

Top 10 Defenders based on Value

Kompany (MCI) £7.5m
Vermaelen (ARS) £7.0m
Terry (CHE) £7.0m
Baines (EVE) £7.0m
Vidic (MUN) £7.0m
Evra (MUN) £7.0m
Cahill (CHE) £6.5m
Luiz (CHE) £6.5m
Ivanovic (CHE) £6.5m
Cole (CHE) £6.5m

Vincent Kompany’s influential campaign last season leaves the Manchester City captain the most expensive defender this time round at £7.5m. Vidic’s return from his long injury lay-off will likely see some investment, whilst the set-pieces of Leighton Baines makes the Everton left-back a favourite among fantasy managers.

Chelsea’s Ashley Cole looks a good option with the left-back position at Stamford Bridge nailed-on, whilst Rafael (5.5) will offer the best way into the Manchester United defence. Tottenham’s goal-scoring defender Jan Vertonghen is priced at £6.5m and Fulham’s Brede Hangeland is reasonably priced up at £5.0m, whilst Sunderland’s Carlos Cuellar at £4.5m may be under-priced having played previously under Martin O’Neill at Aston Villa

Midfielders

Top 10 Midfielders based on Value

Silva (MCI) £10.0m
Mata (CHE) £9.5m
Hazard (CHE) £9.5m
Dempsey (FUL) £9.5m
Gerrard (LIV) £9.5m
Bale (TOT) £9.5m
Walcott (ARS) £9.0m
Lampard (CHE) £9.0m
Valencia (MUN) £9.0m
Nani (MUN) £9.0m

David Silva is this year’s most expensive midfielder with the Spanish international racking up 184 fantasy points last season. Clint Dempsey’s price has soared (7.5) after his fine campaign for Fulham last year and many fantasy managers will undoubtedly opt for the likes of Mata, Hazard and Bale ahead of the American.

Frank Lampard is priced at £9.0m, highlighting his diminishing role at Stamford Bridge, whilst Shinji Kagawa and Ashley Young of Manchester United are both priced at a reasonable £8.5m. Tottenham’s Gylfi Sigurdsson comes in at £9.0m after his goal-scoring antics in the second half of the season.

This year’s value looks to be had lower down with Aston Villa’s N’Zogbia (6.5) likely to be given more freedom under Paul Lambert and Jack Wilshere (6.5) returning for the Gunners. Adel Taarabt was a disappointment last season but at £6.0m the Moroccan may still find some support. West Ham’s Kevin Nolan (6.0) and Southampton’s Adam Lallana (6.0) offer the best choices of the promoted side, which is curiously the same price as Manchester United’s Tom Cleverly and Liverpool’s Joe Cole.

Forwards

Top 10 Forwards based on Value

Van Persie (ARS) £13.0m
Rooney (MUN) £12.0m
Aguero (MCI) £11.5m
Torres (CHE) £10.0m
Suarez (LIV) £9.5m
Adebayor (MCI) £9.5m
Cisse (NEW) £9.5m
Giroud (ARS) £9.0m
Tevez (MCI) £9.0m
Balotelli (MCI) £9.0m

With Drogba having departed for China, Chelsea’s Fernando Torres (10.) looks the pick of the forwards, especially with the Champions League winners opening double Gameweek. Arsenal’s Robin Van Persie leads the way at £13.0m although, whether the Dutch forward remains at the Emirates Stadium remains to be seen. Sergio Aguero (11.5) and Wayne Rooney (12.0) both look good options for the Manchester clubs, whilst fantasy managers may take a punt on Luis Suarez and the Uruguayan may be key for Brendan Rogers’ new look side this season.

Further down the order Darren Bent (8.5), Nikica Jelavic (8.5)  are solid choices with both being regulars for their clubs but Reading’s Pavel Pogrebnyak (5.0) looks a stand-out choice for fantasy managers on a budget.
