Copa America 2011 Preview – Group C
Mexico (CONCACAF Invitation)
Uruguay are third favourites to lift the Copa America and are priced at 11.00. With Liverpool’s Luis Suarez, Diego Forlan of Atletico Madrid and Edison Cavani of Palermo, Uruguay have enough firepower to challenge the main contenders in this editions competition. Uruguay of course impressed in last years World Cup in South Africa, finishing 4th and Oscar Tabarez’s squad largely consists of the same personnel, making them a particularly strong selection in the back to lay market. There is also currently good value in Uruguay to win Group C at 2.50.
Peru have history in escaping the group stages and have reached the quarter final in the last five editions of the Copa America. Experienced coach Sergio Markarian cannot call upon the likes of Jefferson Farfan and Claudio Pizarro, with Paolo Guerrero looking to lead the line in the absence of Peru’s first choice strike force. Fiorentina’s Juan Manuel Vargas looks likely to shrug off injury which is a key boost in a squad with a large influence of Peruvian based players.
CONCACAF representatives Mexico have been invited for the last 7 editions of the Copa America, reaching the quarter finals each time as well as the final twice. But this Mexico squad is vastly different to the side that has recently lifted the Gold Cup, with Tottenham’s Giovanni Dos Santos the only non-Mexican based player in the squad. Only 4 players in the squad are over the age of 25 with assistant Luis Fernando Tena tasked with progression in the tournament with a vastly young and inexperienced squad.
GROUP WINNERS: Uruguay
FORECAST: Uruguay 1st, Chile 2nd, Peru 3rd, Mexico 4th
