Champions League Predictions 5th & 6th April

Barcelona narrowly beat Vilarreal 1-0 on the weekend despite 70% possession of the ball. Pep Guardiola clearly had one eye on the Champions League quarter final clash with Ukrainian league leaders Shakhtar Donetsk. David Villa was substituted midway into the second half and Messi started from the bench.

There have been at least 2 goals in every Champions League game at the Nou Camp this season with an average of 3.25 goals a game and at home in La Liga nearly 75% of games have finished with 3 goals or more for the Catalans. Opponents Shakhtar of course topped Arsenal’s group and have talented attackers in their team with the Brazilian contingent of Willian, Jadson and Douglas Costa as well as Eduardo. In Shakhtar’s 4 away games in this season’s competition there has been 15 goals; an average of 3.75 goals a game and with the imperious Barcelona taking to the pitch goals will always be expected.

Over 2.5 goals (Barcelona v Shakhtar) @1.5

In the all English fair, Manchester United travel down to London to play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the Champions League quarter final first leg. Manchester United have a formidable away record in the Champions League. The Red Devils have only lost once in 21 away Champions League games. In their last 11 away games in the competition they have scored in 10. Head to head and Manchester United have scored in 9 of their last 10 meetings against Chelsea and showed on Saturday that they can turn it on when needed. Wayne Rooney’s hat trick was key, but the return of Antonio Valencia should also be noted.

Chelsea have rarely been tested at home in the Champions League but have still let Zilina and Spartak Moscow score against them in this seasons competition. David Luiz is of course cup-tied after registering for Benfica in the earlier stages which is a blow. With Berbatov and Hernandez vying for starting berths and trying to impress and the resurgence of Rooney, Alex Ferguson’s men will likely look to take an advantage back to Old Trafford.

Chelsea NOT to keep a clean sheet @1.6
